Will all the attention of the iPhone 4 today, no one realized that Safari 5 is out. the main 5 new features are Reader, better support of HTML5, better performance, Bing Search, and customization with extensions.

The Reader looks great since it provides the ability to read online articles without ads and clicking different pages. And what is HUGE is the BING search option as well as the extensions that will be coming soon.

New iPhone coming on June 22?

ModMyI has an article where the think that Apple will be unveiling the new iPhone on June 22nd Apple usually has its big event at The Yerba Buena Center for Arts, located by the Moscone Center in San Francisco. And they have reserved the place for an event on the 22nd. We will see is the new iPhone has the camera in front, how it will work with the iPhone 4.0 software and if it will go to Verizon.

Many questions and of course no answers until Steve Jobs stands on the stage and show us they new toy (or toys)

iPhone 4.0 is coming soon. Apple just sent invitations to the media for an event on April 8th. That is just 3 days away. Hopefully, Multitasking will be finally here and who knows, we might see some info on the upcoming phones like the front facing camera everybody wants (at least me). I would prefer the camera on the phone than in the iPad.
I would also like to see Calendar info on the lock screen. It is a perfect place to put the calendar since Unlocking->Find the right page->Calendar takes more time if you just want to see it.
We will have to wait and see what new and “I can’t live without” new features will Apple unveil on the 8th.

Quickime X issue?

We are having a little coffution with QuickTime and hope that it is only something that QuickTime does and not a Final Cut problem. We ussually work with 19 bit uncompressed material and never had any problems exporting uncompressed QuickTime files. But recently I found out that after exporting an uncompressed proyect the info on the file indicates a 640 x 480 file instead of the 720 x 486 correct dimentions.

Our forkflow is at folows:
If the material comes from a DigiBeta, we transfer it at a dub house. If not we captured ourself. All material is captured at 10 bit uncompressed.
We create an uncomprresed 10 bit sequence and work on the proyect normaly. Since the file and the timeline have the same settings, there is no need ti render.

Once the project is finished we export with current settings. This creates a new uncompresed QuickTime file. This is the file that has the wrong dimentions while playing with QuickTime X.

It seems that is only a Quicktime issue because if you bring it back to Final Cut Pro it will show withe right dimentions.

Crexels’ Editing Setup

I am writing to get an opinion of what I have done. Crexels is a small company. We have two editing systems and a laptop that can edit if needed. All running Final Cut Studio 2.

I wanted to create a server kind of setup where I can edit from any computer without the need to sync material or move material from one place to another.

Since we don’t have the capital to go actual servers and fiber optics, I decided to go ethernet. I upgraded everything to go gigabyte. I got new cables and a new switcher and got a 3 NAS Iomega drives. These drives have two drives inside and are setup as RAID 1 so I have a backup of everything.

I created a couple of folders in the biggest drive. One for Final Cut Projects and the second one for Resources (Inside the resources folders, there are folders for each project). All the rendering is done locally in each machine. I know that sometimes is a pain to render a few times but it is not a big deal for the projects we do. Initially, I try to run uncompress material from the drives but it was impossible, so I made Pro-Ress files from the uncompress originals and put those in the Resources folder and to my surprise it worked perfectly. The timeline in FCP is uncompressed and the Pro-Ress file and the Uncompress have the same name. When is time to output to master, I just reconnect the master file to the uncompressed which is also locally in the large editing system and voila, done.

The total cost of the improvement was about $725
• Netgear JGS516 ProSafe 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch
• New Cables: about $125
• 3 Iomega StorCenter ix2 – 1 TB (2 x 500 GB) Network Attached Storage

Now, my question to you is what do you think? Can I improve this setup? and how?

Apple iPad

Ok. iPad it out. Now what?

I have been listening to expert in the gadgets field. Some of then can’t wait to get one, others will wait for Version 02. There are many good point on both sides. For the ones that will wait, they mentioned the lack of camera or the lack of multiprocessing. Some hate the close environment of the device, basically you can’t install any application that you like like in a computer. But on the side of the people who can’t wait they say that it will change everything. That is an amazing device and for a great price.

My thought are mixed. And here is why. I would love for it to have a camera to video chat with my family that lives abroad. I would love the multi tasking, so I can work and listen to Pandora at the same time. But do I consider those improvements necessary: I don’t. In regards to the close environment, I DON’T CARE. I love the fact that I know someone is looking at the applications for performance and for any malignant code that can be inside of them. Every time I install something on my computer I wonder if they are stealing info for my computer. I don’t know. How can I check if the software is JUST doing what I was told it would do?

The 3G option is an option that is also a matter of consideration. Do I need it? Only if it works internationally. I have my iPhone to get my emails from anywhere I go. But for the iPad, where am I going to take it that does not have a wi-fi access? I keep thinking and can’t find a place. Maybe I am lucky that everywhere I go I can log to a wi-fi access.

I have a trip in April and I really can’t wait to get one. No heavy or large laptop to carry. Just a thing screen where I can read, watch a movie, work a little if I want to and play games in a nice and large screen.

That is it. I am getting one.
